On September 11, 2001, our Nation was forever changed.

Twenty-three years ago, we, the American people, witnessed terrorists attempt to undermine and destroy our freedom and democracy. What they did not expect was that we would rise in unity as a Nation, demonstrating the very best of our country, our commitments to each other, and the values that define us — emerging stronger than ever.

As a result, a new generation rose to the challenge of protecting this great Country, our democracy, and our freedom. We witnessed young Americans so moved by their patriotism that they joined the ranks of our Armed Forces – knowing it likely meant being sent to war.

As we mark this anniversary, let us all join together in remembering the 2,977 individuals who lost their lives on September 11, as well as the thousands of Marines, Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen who have spent more than two decades fighting the Global War on Terror in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere around the world.

Together, as a Nation, we will ensure that their service and sacrifice are preserved, shared, and given the honor it deserves.
